rebec (Lat.: rubeba, rubella; Sp.: rabel, rabé), klein strijkinstrument met peervormige klankkast en bolvormig achterblad. Het kwam waarschijnlijk via Byzantium of het Moorse Spanje naar Europa. Volgens Hiëronymus de Moravia (na 1270) had het twee in kwintafstand gestemde snaren. In de 16de en 17de eeuw wordt de kwintstemming ook in Midden-Europa vermeld voor de twee- of driesnarige rebecs. Ze werden gebruikt in dansmuziek en bleven in die functie, als kleine pochette, nog tot in de 18de eeuw in gebruik.
